In the developed world, the population as a whole is unhappier and unhealthier than perhaps ever before. We are seeing a global health and happiness crisis of sorts.
According to Daniel Goleman, author of the book Emotional Intelligence, “Each successive generation worldwide since the opening of the twentieth century has lived with a higher risk than their parents of suffering a major depression— not just sadness, but a paralyzing listlessness, dejection, and self-pity, and an overwhelming hopelessness.”
Likewise, an estimated 70% of deaths worldwide are due to chronic diseases. Diseases that can be largely managed or even prevented with healthy lifestyle choices.
These statistics make it clear that we are heading in the wrong direction, and are in desperate need of a way to improve happiness, health, and overall well-being.
There is unfortunately, no easy fix for this situation, but I did have an idea about how I could do my part to help people move in the right direction.

How The Happy.Healthy.Whole Project Came To Be
My Spark Of Inspiration
I think it is fair to say that 2020 has been a very rough year for everyone, starting in about mid-March. My 2020, got off to a bad start a little earlier than that, pretty much as soon as it got started, actually.
On January 2nd, 2020 I suffered an accident at work which has so far required one surgery, and may yet require another. As of this writing I have been out of work for almost 11 months with these injuries. Unfortunately, this was my second work injury in about 2 years time… So I started to think about making a big change in my life.
That is when I came across Gretchen Rubin’s book, The Happiness Project: Or, Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right, Read Aristotle, and Generally Have More Fun.
This New York Times best selling book is about a personal growth project in which the author attempted to become happier by making small changes to her habits and life over the course of a year.
Every month, Gretchen Rubin chose a part of her life to work on – for example energy, marriage, parenting, friendships, hobbies etc. and during each month she made 8 resolutions designed to improve that part of her life.
At the end of the 12-month project Gretchen reported that she felt significantly happier despite only making small changes.
She didn’t do anything drastic like quitting her job, leaving her husband, moving to a new city, or losing any weight. Yet, with consistent effort towards making small but meaningful changes, she did become happier!
Starting My Own Project
I was really inspired by Gretchen Rubin’s Happiness Project, and felt moved to try my own project.
The book The Happiness Project was Gretchen Rubin’s personal account of her own project, not a how-to manual. She does give a small amount of guidance on how to start your own happiness project in her book, but I found myself wanting more.
I wanted a guide about how to set up and carry out my own project. I wanted a step-by-step workbook that would help me figure out where to start, what to focus on, how to set goals and make plans in a way that would help me actually stick to them.
But, after much searching, I determined that, unfortunately, there wasn’t anything like this available. So I decided to make my own project. However, there were a few things that I wanted to do differently….
First and foremost, I wanted to focus not only on happiness, but on overall wellness, well-being, and quality of life.
I feel that in order to be truly happy, we must take a holistic approach to happiness. It’s hard to be happy if you are chronically unhealthy, lonely, lacking in confidence, or have any other major part of your life out of order.
I wanted to make sure that I was really digging deep and addressing all of the things that really mattered to long term-happiness rather than just scratching the surface, or spending time on things that were superficial.
How I Developed The Happy.Healthy.Whole Project
Before starting my own project, I spent months reading and pouring over all the latest research on positive psychology, and revisiting my lessons on Behavior Change from my Master’s Degree in Exercise and Wellness.
From the months of research that I conducted, I put together a project for myself which I called “The Happy.Healthy.Whole Project”.
What Exactly Is The Happy.Healthy.Whole Project?
Simply put, The Happy.Healthy.Whole Project (HHWP) is a framework I designed to improve my everyday habits and thought-processes in a way that would result in long-term, sustainable increases in happiness, health, and overall well-being.
For my personal Happy.Healthy.Whole Project (HHWP), I was interested in finding my calling, continuing to develop a growth mindset, recovering from my surgery, strengthening my relationships, and achieving more work-life balance. These are the things that I identified in my own life that were opportunities for increasing my overall happiness and well-being, long-term.
Documenting My Happy.Healthy.Whole Project
Since starting my own HHWP, I have been documenting my progress in a series of blog posts, for all to see.
On October 8th, I passed 1,000 comments on my blog. It took me just over 6 months to get there. Now, just one and a half months later, my blog has over 1,700 comments! I really saw a huge uptick in the comments and blog traffic when I started posting about my Happy.Healthy.Whole Project regularly.
People started getting more engaged. They were definitely commenting more, and I started seeing the same people coming back regularly to check on my progress, and cheering me on as I worked towards the goals that I had laid out in my HHWP.
I got a lot of great feedback from people who said that Covid-19 has reminded them that they need to reprioritize their health, and that they could really benefit from their own Happy.Healthy.Whole Project to make 2021 a better year.
