In the developed world, the population as a whole is unhappier and unhealthier than perhaps ever before. We are seeing a global health and happiness crisis of sorts.

According to Daniel Goleman, author of the book Emotional Intelligence, “Each successive generation worldwide since the opening of the twentieth century has lived with a higher risk than their parents of suffering a major depression— not just sadness, but a paralyzing listlessness, dejection, and self-pity, and an overwhelming hopelessness.”

Likewise, an estimated 70% of deaths worldwide are due to chronic diseases. Diseases that can be largely managed or even prevented with healthy lifestyle choices.

These statistics make it clear that we are heading in the wrong direction, and are in desperate need of a way to improve happiness, health, and overall well-being.

There is unfortunately, no easy fix for this situation, but I did have an idea about how I could do my part to help people move in the right direction.

That’s why I’ve put together The Happy.Healyhy.Whole Workbook & Planner [AD].

How The Happy.Healthy.Whole Project Came To Be

My Spark Of Inspiration

I think it is fair to say that 2020 has been a very rough year for everyone, starting in about mid-March. My 2020, got off to a bad start a little earlier than that, pretty much as soon as it got started, actually.

On January 2nd, 2020 I suffered an accident at work which has so far required one surgery, and may yet require another. As of this writing I have been out of work for almost 11 months with these injuries. Unfortunately, this was my second work injury in about 2 years time… So I started to think about making a big change in my life.

That is when I came across Gretchen Rubin’s book, The Happiness Project: Or, Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right, Read Aristotle, and Generally Have More Fun.

This New York Times best selling book is about a personal growth project in which the author attempted to become happier by making small changes to her habits and life over the course of a year.

Every month, Gretchen Rubin chose a part of her life to work on – for example energy, marriage, parenting, friendships, hobbies etc. and during each month she made 8 resolutions designed to improve that part of her life.

At the end of the 12-month project Gretchen reported that she felt significantly happier despite only making small changes.

She didn’t do anything drastic like quitting her job, leaving her husband, moving to a new city, or losing any weight. Yet, with consistent effort towards making small but meaningful changes, she did become happier!

Starting My Own Project

I was really inspired by Gretchen Rubin’s Happiness Project, and felt moved to try my own project.

The book The Happiness Project was Gretchen Rubin’s personal account of her own project, not a how-to manual. She does give a small amount of guidance on how to start your own happiness project in her book, but I found myself wanting more.

I wanted a guide about how to set up and carry out my own project. I wanted a step-by-step workbook that would help me figure out where to start, what to focus on, how to set goals and make plans in a way that would help me actually stick to them.

But, after much searching, I determined that, unfortunately, there wasn’t anything like this available. So I decided to make my own project. However, there were a few things that I wanted to do differently….

First and foremost, I wanted to focus not only on happiness, but on overall wellness, well-being, and quality of life.

I feel that in order to be truly happy, we must take a holistic approach to happiness. It’s hard to be happy if you are chronically unhealthy, lonely, lacking in confidence, or have any other major part of your life out of order.

I wanted to make sure that I was really digging deep and addressing all of the things that really mattered to long term-happiness rather than just scratching the surface, or spending time on things that were superficial.

How I Developed The Happy.Healthy.Whole Project

Before starting my own project, I spent months reading and pouring over all the latest research on positive psychology, and revisiting my lessons on Behavior Change from my Master’s Degree in Exercise and Wellness.

From the months of research that I conducted, I put together a project for myself which I called “The Happy.Healthy.Whole Project”.

What Exactly Is The Happy.Healthy.Whole Project?

Simply put, The Happy.Healthy.Whole Project (HHWP) is a framework I designed to improve my everyday habits and thought-processes in a way that would result in long-term, sustainable increases in happiness, health, and overall well-being.

For my personal Happy.Healthy.Whole Project (HHWP), I was interested in finding my calling, continuing to develop a growth mindset, recovering from my surgery, strengthening my relationships, and achieving more work-life balance. These are the things that I identified in my own life that were opportunities for increasing my overall happiness and well-being, long-term.

Documenting My Happy.Healthy.Whole Project

Since starting my own HHWP, I have been documenting my progress in a series of blog posts, for all to see.

On October 8th, I passed 1,000 comments on my blog. It took me just over 6 months to get there. Now, just one and a half months later, my blog has over 1,700 comments! I really saw a huge uptick in the comments and blog traffic when I started posting about my Happy.Healthy.Whole Project regularly.

People started getting more engaged. They were definitely commenting more, and I started seeing the same people coming back regularly to check on my progress, and cheering me on as I worked towards the goals that I had laid out in my HHWP.

I got a lot of great feedback from people who said that Covid-19 has reminded them that they need to reprioritize their health, and that they could really benefit from their own Happy.Healthy.Whole Project to make 2021 a better year.

Well, I have been listening, and I have decided to share my Happy.Healthy.Whole Project with you!

Who Is The Happy.Healthy.Whole Workbook & Planner For?

You might be wondering who the HHW workbook and planner is for – Is it for people that are terribly unhappy, unhealthy, and broken?

No, absolutely not! The reason that I set out to do my HHWP originally, is that I believe both health and happiness are habits.

In other words, health and happiness are things that we must consistently and actively work towards if we want to have any hope of achieving them.

I’d be willing to bet that at some point in the past (or maybe even right now), you have been so caught up and overwhelmed by what is going on in your life that your health, happiness, or both have fallen to the wayside.

Am I right?

That is why I chose to do this project, and to share it with all of you. So that I can live life to the fullest now and so that I can help inspire you to do the same!

The HHW Workbook & Planner is for pretty much everyone! The HHWP focuses on all aspects of life, and there is always at least one area of life that could use improvement even for even the happiest of people. After all, no one is perfect!

The HHW Workbook & Planner is for people that:

  • Want to achieve personal growth.
  • Have had trouble sticking to goals or resolutions in the past.
  • Like having a little more guidance and direction when making a change.
  • Feel that they could benefit from a supportive community who is on the same mission as they are.
  • Want to improve their overall well-being or long-term happiness.

    1. That’s awesome Helen! This format has done absolute wonders for me and I had such good feedback from others, so I thought I’d share it. I’m glad to hear you think it will work well for you. Stay tuned for the launch!

  1. I love the idea of this! Your post is the first I have heard of the book and the Happy Healthy Whole project and I love the thought of making small changes to increase overall happiness and health. And I’m sure the planner really helps keep accountable

    1. Thank you so much for reading Christine! The book presents a simple but very effective concept which I love as well. For me, the planner and tracking sheets were so helpful in sticking to my goals, and also for motivation!

    1. Thank you Brittany, I agree planners are so helpful! And I really like having a physical one that I can actually write in as opposed to on my phone. I don’t know why, but it makes all the difference for me.

    1. Awww thanks Leslie! No shortage of passion here! 😂 It’s been a super tough year for everyone, and so hard to start new routines with so much uncertainty! I hope that this workbook and planner will help with that! Thank you for reading!

  2. I’ always wanted to read this book, but never could get myself to start it. I think it was the 12 month commitment that scared me. I’ve finally made myself come to terms that it takes 21 days to form a habit (and I still struggle with it!!) Though I’m positive that a planner will be a huge help, keeping a track of things and for motivation.
It’s amazing that you actually picked up on the gaps in the book and designed a planner!

    1. If I’m being 100% honest Twishaa, I had a bit of trouble getting through this book, although I did read it all. I absolutely LOVE the concept obviously, but I think I didn’t relate at all to the author. She and I have very different backgrounds and challenges in life. But I did learn a lot from the book.

I too thought the yearlong commitment was a little intimidating, and so give options in my own workbook/planner to do shorter projects which can still have a lot of impact. Thanks so much for reading!

  3. Sounds like an amazing planner, really interested to know more. This isn`t a concept I`m very familiar with, but I want to know more. I loved the fact that your approach focus on well-being and not just happiness. Good luck with everything, it really does like a planner that will turn your life around. And God knows we need 2021 to be better than this year.

    1. Thank you Georgiana! Yes 2020 was a rough one full of surprises and twists and turns. I really think this workbook and planner can help people take control of 2021 a little more. Thanks so much for reading!

  4. What a wonderful idea! I have never heard of this before but it sounds like a perfect planner for me. I truly believe that focusing on well-being and happiness is so important, but also for me it’s making time for the small things.

    1. Yes Gemma, I absolutely agree with you that making time for the small things is really important for happiness. My planner and workbook actually focuses on both short and long-term happiness which is important for overall happiness. Thank you so much for reading!

  5. I love the idea of holistic happiness! It just makes so much sense. We need balance in all areas of our life to achieve any real measure of happiness.
I’ve really enjoyed reading your posts about your HHWP journey. They have been informative and inspiring. Thank you for sharing your journey. I can’t wait to see what’s next for you!

    1. Awww thanks so much Tiffany. It has been so encouraging to have so many of you guys following along with my journey. I’ve gotten so much good feedback about this project already. I can’t wait to share it with all of you guys! Thanks again for following along and stay tuned for plenty more updates on my progress!

  6. This sounds incredible. I love the concept of it and the planner sounds like a really good way to keep track and stay focused.

I look forward to seeing the planner x

    1. I am so glad to hear that you enjoyed this post Rosie. The balancing act of life can definitely be tough! One of the first activities in this workbook I found incredibly useful to help me figure out where I was lacking balance. I can’t wait to show it to you guys!

  7. Great post. It’s easy to get lost in day-to-day life, sometimes just taking a step back to go on a walk or something else to distress is important. And maybe it would be easier to do if it was planned beforehand!

    1. Thanks Joe! I absolutely agree that taking time to manage stresses very important in this day and age. It is good time to take time for yourself and even plan in your stress management in advance sometimes. Thank you for reading!

  8. I love this! I haven’t heard of this project, and so thank you for sharing 🙂 I love the idea of looking out for yourself, whether during the new year or right now!

    1. I’m glad I could introduce you to this new book Eleanor. It’s a pretty cool idea! and great point I think it’s important as you said to take care of yourself year-round. A lot of emphasis gets put on the new year but we can really start things anytime. Thank you for reading!

    1. I have some serious ADD myself Alexis. And at least for me I know that planning things out and being more organized definitely makes my life a little easier. Thank you so much for taking the time to read!

  9. This is a really interesting concept and one I’m definitely interested in trying out. It can sometimes feel really overwhelming to look at your whole life and think about the areas that need improvement or you could be happier about , so I love this idea of focusing on different things at a time!

    1. I’m so glad to hear you’re intrigued by this idea Kat! I absolutely agree that it can be really intimidating to try and figure out how to know what you should be focusing on. That was one of the big problems I had trying to start this project on my own from Gretchen Rubin’s instructions. That’s why I came up with what I think is a pretty cool self-reflection activity at the start of the workbook that helps you figure out where you might be lacking some of that balance. I think you guys will find it really useful! Thank you so much for taking the time to read, and stay tuned!

    1. Oh no, sorry Ellie! There’s just a form at the bottom of the post that collects a name and email so I can let you know when it launches. But I’m sure you’ll see it on social media as well! Thanks so much for your support!

  10. Oooh I like the idea of the Happy Healthy Whole Project!! So important that everyone has the resources to be their best selves. It is great that the workbook and planner are available to lay things out in a visual sense. Thanks for sharing!

    Nancy ✨ mdrnminimalists.com

    1. Thank you Nancy, I am so glad to hear that you like the idea! I agree that it’s important people have the resources for personal growth. It can all be a little overwhelming sometimes without a little guidance or structure! Thanks so much for stopping by and reading! ☺️

    1. Aw thank you Kelly, I’m so glad to hear you’ve enjoyed following along with my journey! Keep your eyes open for the Workbook and planner to be launching in the next week here.

I agree that everyone’s happy healthy whole journey will be unique and different. In fact it will be much more effective if it’s tailored to each person’s values. I have set the workbook and planner up for that purpose exactly. Thank you so much for reading and following along with my project! ❤️

  11. It’s amazing how you’ve taken your project full circle and are now planning to share it with everyone this way! So inspiring to see! I do love how you’re focusing on the whole health aspect instead of just focusing on the idea of happy. Wishing you much success with the continuation of this project in 2021!

    1. Thank you so much Alison! I have gotten such good feedback from people that I figured I should just go ahead and share it with everyone.

I definitely agree that happiness must be holistic. We can’t just focus on the superficial we have to find the root causes to actually make meaningful changes to happiness. Thanks so much for adding to the discussion and following along with my project!

    1. Sounds like a plan Heidi! The happy healthy whole project is of my own creation so I am a little relieved you haven’t heard of it before! 😁

I based it on Gretchen Ruben’s book the happiness project, but it is really quite unique to that original project that she did. I hope you’ll check it out when it launches, thanks so much for reading!

  12. I really enjoyed this post. I’d never heard of the Happy Healthy Whole Project before but it sounds like an incredible self-development tool. I’ll have to look into this further. Thanks for sharing Clarissa 🙂

    1. Thanks so much Em! The happy healthy whole project is my own brain child and passion project. It’s something that I’ve been working on for a while and I’m super excited to share with you guys very shortly! Thanks for stopping by and reading. ❤️

  13. I really enjoyed this post. I’d never heard of the Happy Healthy Whole Project before but it sounds like an incredible self-development tool. I’ll have to look into this further. Thanks for sharing Clarissa!

    1. Aw thank you so much for the kind words and vote of confidence Michelle! I can’t wait for you to see the planner and workbook. Thank you so much for following along with my happy healthy whole journey so far!

  14. Yes to all of this!!!! The idea the planner and I enjoyed reading all your posts while you were doing this project. This is really great for people, because so many of them believe that happiness is just a feeling when it’s really more than that. You have to actively choose to be happy (of course understandably this may not be the case for everyone especially those suffering from mental illness) in order to find true purpose and meaning in life. This project will definitely put anyone on the right part!

    1. Awww thank you so much Rebekah, I am really glad to hear that you love the idea of this planner and workbook!

You make a fantastic point about people underestimating happiness is just a simple feeling. As you said it is much more than that. I truly believe that happiness is a habit!

And yes you are absolutely right This is not meant to be a cure for any sort of mental illness Just kind of the average Joe’s guide to living a more fulfilling life. I can’t wait to hear what you think about it when it has launched. Thank you so much for reading and sharing your insight and thoughts with me here!

  15. I absolutely love everything about this! I am going to look into the HHWP workbook and planner. Not because I’m unhappy, because I consider myself to be a happy person. I just think that there might be more and I’d like to feel like I have more direction. Thank you for sharing this!!

    1. You are very welcome! I’m glad you’re thinking about trying the happy healthy whole project, And I definitely agree that this sort of format isn’t just for unhappy people. When I kicked off my own project I was actually happier than I have been in many years, but there are a lot of places in my life where I think I could use a little bit more balance and I feel that the happy healthy whole project has really helped me achieve that. Thank you so much for stopping by to check this out, and best of luck on your goals!

  16. Hi Clarissa. Well, they do say that every cloud has a silver lining. You certainly seem to have found yours! I wish you the best of luck with your planner – now should be a great time to launch, that’s for sure.

    1. Thank you Richie! I am a big believer in looking for opportunities in the wake of broken plans.

And yes! While I am a huge believer that people can start new habits and goals ANY time, the majority of people look to start them at the New Year, so I am determined to be ready to launch by then! 😁

  17. I love the concept of Happy.Healthy.Whole, the question for me is always whether I am currently mentally healthy enough to start and I end up not doing it. But knowing it can take 21 days to firm a habit really helps me visualise. Thank you for sharing this ❤️

  18. Sorry to read about your work-related injuries; but, there is a blessing in disguise. I am impressed you started getting from 1000 to 17000 comments; as you started your HHWP.👏 Every little detail about your HHWP is suitable for anyone who needs to completely change or wants to improve their lives. 👍

    1. Thanks so much for the kind words Sara! I agree that there have been some major silver linings to my injury situation. I always try to look for opportunities in the wake of bad things happening. And this has really allowed me to reevaluate where I’m going with my career, and allowed me to develop my blog and of course this workbook. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on it! ☺️

  19. I really like Gretchen Rubin’s ideas of small changes every month, but I’m not sure I could handle 8 monthly resolutions! The concept is good though.
    Good luck on your journey!

    1. Thank you Rachel! 8 does seem like a lot doesn’t it? Especially when she added 8 new ones every month until there were 88 by November! It was a little much for me, but it gave me so much inspiration!

    1. Thank you Priyanka! It really does make my day when I see the same visitors continuing to return again and again. I guess that means I must be doing something right to have caught your interest. Thank you so much for the vote of confidence in me and my content. You are very much appreciated! ☺️

  20. I love this whole idea. Our lives are always changing and developing – so why not focus on making that change a positive one? I find that many of the biggest (and most influential) changes in my life start with an event that forced me to pivot. It sounds like your workplace injury may be just that in your life. Congratulations on taking that experience and turning it into something positive!

    1. Thank you so much Britt! I absolutely agree that there have been multiple big things in my life that were negative, that cause me to make a leap that I had always wanted to, but just didn’t have the courage to do yet. Sometimes it’s a good thing for an event to force your hand I suppose. I love your thought about things always changing so we might as well make it for the positive! 😁

  21. This is great! Congrats on your digital product! I think you did a fantastic job documenting your own journey. I’m very happy for you and I will be starting me journey too!

    1. Thank you Johana! I am so excited about launching my first digital product. I’ve really put my everything into it and I think you are going to love it! Thanks so much for checking it out, and best of luck on your own journey!

  22. Ooh I’m so excited! I just pre-ordered my copy! Not sure if you’ll receive the name on the credit card, but if you do, you’re one of the only people to know my proper name! Shhhh!
This year didn’t start off too well for me either with a breakup and being ill but I think it’s actually been a good year for me all around, starting my blog and businesses. I could definitely do with some guidance though so I’m looking forward to getting stuck into your planner from the get go 🙂

    1. Yaaaaaaay, thank you so much Ellie! And you’re in luck, I only get the email address, so your secret is safe. 😉 I am so excited for you to get the planner and I can not wait to hear your feedback on it!

I’m sorry you had a rough start to your year too, but so glad it has gotten better since! It sounds like our blogs have been a good source of purpose and passion for both of us!

Thanks again for supporting me with a purchase Ellie! ☺️

  23. I love that you have put together this digital workbook and planner! I seem to recall one of your earlier goals was to create an online product. 🙂

No doubt this workbook and planner is also packed with experienced information; people who follow their own advice and practices cannot help but share writing that works.

    1. Awwww Thank you so much for your kind words Jaya! And you’re absolutely right, launching a digital product was one of my big November happy.healthy.whole goals, good memory! 😁 Thank you so much for coming by and checking it out. 💜

  24. Such a fab idea! It must be such an exciting time for you getting this project off the ground!!

I love the idea of creating new healthy habits. It’s too easy to get caught in the everyday and lose focus on the bigger picture, isn’t it!

    Helen x

    1. It definitely is easy to get caught up in the everyday gring and lose site of the big picture Helen!

It is pretty exciting to be able to launch a product like this. Thanks so much for stopping by to give this a read!

  25. It is so important that we understand and are informed of all of the potential diseases that can be formed through a poor lifestyle. The last thing we want is to have regrets because of that daily habit of drinking soda or the likes. I am happy to hear that you’ve started your project! Despite everything going on, you pushed to make this happen. So proud of you :)! Love that your project has been making great progress! Love everything within the planner. Keep it up!!

    Nancy ✨ mdrnminimalists.com

  26. I love hearing a story of how a site came to be. I’m really sorry to hear about your accident though. 2021 is sure to be a year of optimism for people. I think you will have great luck in the new year.
